A couple of years ago, I began to notice a lot of the friends around my age putting on weight. Actually, I didn’t notice I was included until I had trouble getting into my clothes, and then I saw a picture of myself! UUUUUggh!
At the Dr. for a checkup, he says, ‘what’s going on with your weight?’ After ruling out a thyroid issue, he looked at my age. Then, he began talking as though it was a given – his prescription was 10,000 steps per day. He showed me the app with the red heart on my phone to keep track of my steps.
Well, I had trouble figuring out how to get to 10,000 steps, but I begin to exercise 30 minutes per day, 5 times / week. I was so proud of my commitment!
However, in a subsequent visit with a different Dr., she indicated that due to my age, it didn’t matter if I exercised 30 minutes – 5 times a week the weight wasn’t going anywhere. She actually said I needed to do double. I was really discouraged . . . I stopped altogether 🙁
I noticed when I stopped exercising, I was out of breath after going up a flight of stairs. . . so exercise was working even if the weight wasn’t noticeably coming off. I resumed exercising and I also noticed a jacket that I wasn’t able to fit previously began to fit – kudos to losing weight in my arms!
10,000 Steps . Finally, by taking a walk with my friend on the marina, I happened upon 10,000 steps — it’s a little more than 3 miles. This is how I get it in (see pic below — beginning of my walk and the end). It’s also a great way to disconnect! I initially started on weekends, now I go 5 times / week.
Well, I’m learning that even though PE is no longer required, we still need to keep it moving.
